Tuesday 7/30 JOAN MANDLE at the DEMOCRACY MATTERS SUMMER SPEAKER SERIES
THE SERIES: To learn more about Clean Elections and find out how you
can become involved with Democracy Matters on your campus, please join
us at this summer's Democracy Matters Speaker Series. The series is
free and open to the public. The purpose of the series is create a
public space for discussion of clean elections, to introduce Boston to
the work of Democracy Matters, and to encourage more college students
and community residents to join the struggle to get private money out of
politics.
THE SPEAKER: JOAN MANDLE, Executive Director of Democracy Matters, was
previously Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Colgate
University, where she also directed the college's Women's Studies Program.
She has long bridged the gap between academia and politics, serving as
Campaign Manager for incumbent Congressman Robert W. Edgar of Pennsylvania
in both 1984 and 1986. She also worked on Barbara Boxer's successful
California Senatorial race in 1998. More recently, she served as Common
Cause San Francisco Bay Area Field Coordinator, spearheading a two-year
grassroots organizing drive for campaign finance reform. That effort
resulted in the successful passage of significant campaign finance reform
in both Oakland and San Francisco.
