Hello.

It sounds, from the media coverage of the topic at least, that we shall
soon be involved in a war to oust Iraqi Dictator Saddam Hussein.

Make no mistake, the man is a brutal dictator and by no means an ally of
peace or human rights. None the less, some of you may be questioning the
peaceful intentions of our government as it takes the War on Terror to
Iraq. Certainly the embargo and US bombings have not been helpful to the
Iraqi people, and it is reasonable to question whether a war with Iraq
would further international human rights and the agenda of a safer and
more peaceful world.

If past actions and policies speak to current motivations, our government
is more concerned with hegemony and access to oil than it is with human
rights. If this bothers you, and you believe that we should organize to
confront this issue, you are not alone.

Want to do something about if before the War is already on?

I would like to get togethor with interested people to plan on how to make
alternative voices heard in the debate on our policy toward Iraq.
Posibilities include educating ourselves, inviting speakers and generating
public debate, educating others with information not available in
mainstream news sources, etc.

If you would be interested in persuing such a course of action, please
contact me so that we can organize a date to meet and talk over the
issues.

I hope to hear from you. Kindly do not use this list for discussion -
peace-discuss would be a far more appropriate forum.

Regards,
Eric Downes
