The VooDoo backlash apparently was not enough to satisfy everyone,
so apparently the backlash against "Aimee Smith for choosing the
wrong tactics" continues... (VooDoo folks claim they are leftists who
just don't like my tactics - but then are willing to forgo both their
principles *and* their tactics to target me (logic?)... damn, I must be
truly dangerous!)
Check VooDoo's spring 2002 (web.mit.edu/voodoo/www) to see not just
targeting of me and mention of my breasts, but also the trivializing of
gang-rape, pedophelia, murder of women, and rape by means of drugging.
And as far as I can tell, the editors aren't so annoyed by things
like the "Smash the Patriarchy" bake sale nor the Bling-Bling posters.
The best I could glean from a drunk rep of the mag last night was that,
basically, I intimidate young men by out-arguing them... they feel silenced,
you see. Fortunately, women at MIT *never* feel silenced -not by rape, not
by sexual harassment, not by being blatantly ignored, not by being shouted
down in meetings... we women are so very lucky that way. My other "crime"
is that I am not swayed by their arguments... yup, I still believe that my
and the feelings of other people matter, that there is no "correct" way to
interpret voodoo, and that I should have respect for myself, sorry that I
can't compromise on these... yeah, stubborn, I know.
well, since my thesis announcement is being fwd-ed to lists of people
who seem to have nothing better to do than harass me, why not invite
the cool people along as well?
Consider yourself cordially invited to my thesis defense today. Can't
promise it will be interesting, but if you are interested in solar
cells, process modeling, or defects in silicon, then there will be
something for you.
Here's to a world where we women can put 100% of our energy into
working on creating sustainable ways of living and celebrating the
joy of simply *being* rather than having to watch our backs, deal
with harassment, and have to argue our right to respect and safety every
step of the way... and here's to each and every one of you who work in
one way or another to make that goal a bit closer for any of us - whether
it be women, people of color, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, LBGTs, people struggling
against poverty, people struggling against AIDS, people living in overt war
zones... You are the truest treasure of MIT.
In hope,
Aimee
