The evocative documentary of Afghan-American Masuda Sultan's journey
back to Kandahar, Afghanistan in December 2001 to see what has become
of her country.
The film documents Masuda's departure from New York, her arrival in
Pakistan and cross into Afghanistan, negotiations with the local
warlord for security escorts, the return to her place of birth and
reunion with family, travel through the countryside, a visit to a
recently reopened school for girls, visits to refugee camps, and the
terrible discovery that 19 members of her extended family were killed
in the U.S. bombing campaign.
Masuda was born in Kandahar and fled to the U.S. with her family when
she was five years old. She is founder of the Young Afghan-World
Alliance <http://www.ya-wa.org> and a board member of Women for
Afghan Women, a collective based in New York City dedicated to
working for the human rights of Afghan women.
Please join us for a screening of the documentary and a discussion of
the current state of affairs in Afghanistan and prospects for the
future with Masuda and special guests.
