<P>>UMASS AMHERST REFUSES TO BARGAIN WITH RA UNION, ARRESTS STUDENTS </P></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Tell UMass: DROP THE CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST STUDENTS!
<DIV></DIV>> END THE DISCIPLINARY ACTION!
<DIV></DIV>> OBEY THE LAW AND NEGOTIATE WITH THE UNION!
<DIV></DIV>> NO PUBLIC MONEY FOR UNION BUSTING!
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>PLEASE call and email the following people to express your
<DIV></DIV>>EXTREME distress at the actions the University is considering.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>** Chancellor Marcellete Williams
<DIV></DIV>> mwilliams@chancellor.umass.edu, (413)545-2211
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>** Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs F. Javier Cevallos

<DIV></DIV>>University of Massachusetts Resident Assistants made history
<DIV></DIV>>this year by becoming the first group of undergraduate student
<DIV></DIV>>workers in the country to organize a union. They democratically
<DIV></DIV>>voted to join UAW Local 2322 in a state certified election.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Yet the University is refusing to bargain with the union in
<DIV></DIV>>violation of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 150E. In response
<DIV></DIV>>to the administration's vow to drag the process through the courts
<DIV></DIV>>for "four or five years", RA union supporters staged an act of
<DIV></DIV>>non-violent civil disobedience at the Whitmore Administration
<DIV></DIV>>building past Monday.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>The University responded to the sit-in with the arrest of 34
<DIV></DIV>>protesters-the first mass arrest on campus in a decade. In
<DIV></DIV>>addition, the administration is taking disciplinary action
<DIV></DIV>>against some of the protestors.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>The University is threatening some students with academic
<DIV></DIV>>suspension, and criminal charges ranging from trespassing
<DIV></DIV>>to resisting arrest. The University is also threatening
<DIV></DIV>>to suspend all RAs without pay, and not let them keep
<DIV></DIV>>their jobs next year.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>The UAW organizer is barred from campus, and students
<DIV></DIV>>from nearby schools who participated in the sit-in
<DIV></DIV>>are barred from campus for two years!!
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>This year, UMass is facing SEVERE budget cuts. We
<DIV></DIV>>want the university to stop spending public money on
<DIV></DIV>>union-busting and arrests, and spend it in the classroom!
<DIV></DIV>>The same office that is fighting the RAs is also cutting
<DIV></DIV>>the childcare program.
