Subject: Planning Meeting to Support Vieques, Puerto Rico
To: CHoffman@ci.cambridge.ma.us
Dear friends and comrades:
You are invited to parcitipate in a planning meeting for an important action
in the Boston area in support of civil disobedience and resistance in the
Island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. You are probably aware that civil
desobedience has effectively prevented the US Navy to use that island for
live ammunition target practice. A large section of Puerto Rican society
supports the resistance, including religious and mainstream political
parties. Even the Governor of Puerto Rico, Rosello, appeared to support the
eviction of the Navy from the island until recent, when he signed an
agreement with President Clinton behind the protesters back.
Those who continue to occupy land the Navy appropriated for their criminal
purposes are in danger of behing now forcefully evicted and imprisoned. The
US Federal Government is planning, together with PR Governor Rosello the best
way to do this, and soon.
We, at LFSC say this situation is not an isolated act of oppression and
resistance, but rather the result of more than 100 years of US colonialism in
Puerto Rico.
We want to ask your support, your ideas, your insights on a people to people
support campaign for Vieques.
Please come, or send a representative to a planning meeting that will take
place next Thursday, March 30th at the Boston Community Church, 565 Boylston
Street. The meeting will go from 6:30pm til 8:30pm.
