Speak Out! Act Up! Media Activism and Social Justice at Northeastern
University Presents:
Rick Rowley from Big Noise Films (This is What Democracy Looks Like,
Zapatista) will be speaking about the role of media activism in the current
counter-globalization movement. He will screen 9.11, a film shot in the
streets of New York in the immediate wake of September 11 and some more
recent short tactical media pieces.
Thursday April 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Raytheon Amphitheatre, Egan Centre
Northeastern University. Admission is 3$ at the door, or pay what you can.
9.11 listens to the voices of New York City in mourning, a city coming to
terms with the aftermath of events on September 11th and the potential
violence of a protracted war. 9.11 offers initial critical perspectives of
U.S. policy leading up to the World Trade Center attack, necessary to
constructing an informed and rational response. The video also documents
the media treatment and
racial backlash against Arab-Americans and how those communities are
responding.
This event is sponsored by Communication Studies, African-American Studies,
Political Science and Cinema Studies, and the Progressive Student Alliance,
with support from the Office of Affirmative Action and Diversity.
