A FREE concert of "banned" songs to unite a
multiracial, intergenerational audience.
8 to 80 year old local artists of HIP-HOP, Folk,
Rock, & Jazz, Classical musicians and spoken
wordsmiths celebrate peace and reclaim civil
liberties lost under the U.S. PATRIOT Act.

TAKE BACK THE MUSIC/TAKE BACK OUR FREEDOMS will
take place on Saturday March 16, 7-10 PM at the
Cambridge YWCA, 7 Temple St. in Central Square,
Cambridge MA.

Following the September 11 attacks and U.S.
response, Clear Channel communications put out a
list of 200 "questionable songs" which were then
pulled by the hundreds off radio stations under
their control. Songs included "Blowin in the
Wind, "Imagine, "Peace Train", "What a
Wonderful World" and everything by Rage Against
the Machine. While these songs were discouraged
and not officially banned, the restriction this
represents parallels a serious and real banning
of peace-making as national policy. Nancy Murray
(ACLU/Cambridge Peace Commission) will speak on
the loss of civil liberties for foreigners and
U.S. citizens under the USA PATRIOT ACT.

To "take back our liberties" the Cambridge Peace
Commission and Cambridge United for Justice with
Peace are hosting a FREE concert of music and
related ideas.
MC Amatul Hannan (Director of DAGGER at The
Theater Offensive) and MC Nina LaNegra (cultural
warrior and media activist) present over 40
diverse performers including: Brenda Walcott
singing "Strange Fruit", Freestyle Rap by Kiki
Breevlife of Critical Breakdown, Call to Prayer
and Oud played by Tareef Kawaf, Folksongs by
Marcia Deihl and Martha Leader, Sergio Reyes &
Rafael Medina with "Canto Libre", Haitian poet
Tontongi, spoken word by DAGGER:dykes with a
cutting edge, 14 year old Cate Levin with Chris
Felknor on guitar, EROC(of the rap collective
The Foundation), 8 year old Nyla Wissa, poetry
by Soul Brown the freedom prophetess, "Pop Goes
Our Freedom!" by The Raging Grannies, and many
more.

To keep up the momentum in claiming our rights
and freedoms, members of the Cambridge UJP group
have drafted a city council resolution - a bill
of rights for Cambridge residents which would
call for Cambridge as a sanctuary for freedom of
speech, freedom of assembly, and the pursuit of
happiness - all outlawed by the USA PATRIOT Act.
