"Reviving the Elixir of Life"
An evening with Rajendra Singh
Wednesday, March 13, 2002
7:00 pm
MIT Room 2-190
(to locate see http://whereis.mit.edu/bin?locate=bldg_2)
Since the mid 1980s, Rajendra Singh and his organization Tarun Bharat
Sangh, are leading a successful effort of greening Alwar district, a
drought-prone region of Rajasthan, India.
By rediscovering the local know how for building check dams ("johad")
and combining it with strong principles of local participatory
management, Rajendra Singh inspired a holistic transformation of rural
life in over 800 villages: from making agriculture viable again,
reversing migration to cities, re-foresting the Aravali hill slopes,
rejuvenating seasonal rivulets into perennial rivers and starting
women's self-help groups and schools. It was the revival of
traditional rainwater harvesting systems that helped many areas of
Rajasthan and Gujarat to withstand the drought in the year 2000.
Rajendra Singh was awarded the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay award for
community leadership in 2001. The award was in recognition of not just
his community leadership but also that of the traditional wisdom of
rural Rajasthan.
