The legislature is moving to repeal Clean Elections (ballot initiative
passed by 2/3 of the vote 3 years ago).
The governor has promised to veto a repeal by the House and Senate, so a
2/3 majority is needed in both chambers to override the executive branch.
We need volunteers in our office to staff an emergency phone bank, starting
Sunday night at 6 p.m. We can use people day and night next week to help
make the calls -- PLEASE volunteer if you can. We can also fax (or e-mail)
a list of names to you and you can call people from home. We also need
people to:
* Make calls to your senators (and state representatives) urging them to
oppose a repeal of Clean Elections or exempting the legislature from it
* Call Senate President Birmingham (617-722-1500) and tell him the voters
want Clean Elections fully funded, not repealed or changed to exempt the
legislature. The Senate President typically does not participate in Senate
votes, but ask him specifically to cast a vote if/when the repeal comes to
the floor
* Write Letters to the Editor of your local papers demanding that lawmakers
respect the will of the voters
Please forward this message as widely as possible. While the Supreme
Judicial Court weighs possible remedies for funding the law, we have to
fend off this last-ditch, desperate attack on the law and the voters who
passed it. Thanks for your help. Call with any questions, and volunteer if
you can.
