need it more than ever.
Many of you performed or attended a sing-out for peace in
2000 or have been part of peace efforts in 2002. We have
another opportunity to be part of a music scene for freedom and
liberty and hope you might help make it possible. - a
community concert for peace and freedom on March 16.
You may already know that<FontFamily><param>Arial</param><smaller> f<FontFamily><param>Times New Roman</param><bigger>ollowing the September 11 attacks
Clear Channel Communications put out an advisory with a list
of 200 "questionable songs" which were then pulled by the
hundreds off radio stations under their control. Songs included
"Blowin in the Wind", "Burning Down the House", "Imagine",
"Mack the Knife" and everything by Rage Against the Machine.
This "banning" of songs parallels the banning of peace-making as
national policy and the banning of civil liberties for foreigners
and U.S. citizens. The US continues to inflict retaliatory violence
against Afghanistan and extend their military and political heavy
hand to an ever- widening circle of people and countries. The
treatment of prisoners to shackles, interrogation and
disappearances rivals the worst state violators of human rights.
The Bush administration has upended the Bill of Rights by
passing "the Patriot's Act" restricting peoples' freedoms and
making real a right-wing Republican agenda which has been in
the wings for years.
We in Cambridge want to take back our rights to democracy,
freedom and peace. Members of the Peace Commission and
the Cambridge UJP group are drafting a city council resolution
that is a bill of rights for Cambridge residents. This order would
envision Cambridge as a safe haven (sanctuary) for freedoms of
speech, assembly and the pursuit of happiness all specifics
outlawed by the Patriot's Act.
We want to punctuate this campaign and support a large
AFSC anti-war conference on March 16 with a concert of
songs for peace and freedom. We are just now reaching
out to local performers to choose 1 of the "banned" songs
to sing. The audience would be welcome to be involved. In
between the singing, we would have short informational pieces
about the current situation of the war, implications of the
Patriot's Act and what people can do. While the concert would
be held in Cambridge and have a focus for the Cambridge city
council resolution, we would welcome all participants in the
planning and attendance.
We are looking for celebratory and bold ways to build our
communities in support of civil liberties and democracy and to
defy our government's embrace of war and injustice.
If you would want to help organize this event, sing reach
out to other singers, etc. pleas let me know. The time
frame is short but if there is a collective will, then we can
find a way.
peace.
