The MIT Western Hemisphere Project presents ...
WHAT'S UP WITH COLOMBIA?
------------------------
a film & discussion event featuring:
* Josh Rubenstein, Amnesty International
* Jean Jackson, MIT Anthropology Program
Tuesday, January 8: 7 pm in MIT Room 3-133
The event is open to all; admission is free;
food and light refreshments will be provided
Details
-------
Josh Rubenstein, a long-time human-rights activist and scholar,
will show a film about the unremitting violence in Colombia.
Jean Jackson, professor of anthropology at MIT, will discuss
"Plan Colombia" -- a US-government-inspired military/political
program, subsidized by the US tax-payer to the tune of more than
a billion dollars. We will address these questions: What is
happening in Colombia? Why? And what can we do to help bring
an end to the terror there?
RUBENSTEIN has been Amnesty USA's North-East Regional Director
for more than twenty-five years and has written numerous articles
and books. He is an Associate at the Davis Center at Harvard
University. JACKSON has been doing anthropological field-work and
research in Colombia, Guatemala, and Mexico for more than thirty
years. She is a leading authority on the politics of ethnic and
social identity among indigenous populations in Colombia.
This event is organized by the MIT Western Hemisphere Project. It
is part of our "Tuesday Night Terror" film/discussion series: each
week we show a film or video about terrorism and human rights in
the Americas, then discuss it with guest speakers. In subsequent
sessions we will look at Brazil, Nicaragua, Peru, and the United
States. See: http://web.mit.edu/hemisphere/events/terror.shtml
