Hi Felix, Eli, Tobi,
Just a quick response to a few people from Felix's last email:
Felix and I often spar...this is just one more chapter.
The extremism of some can be dangerous if swallowed whole, if you'll excuse
the pun. Much of what Felix and Cohen say discredits their political
realism and makes me question their understanding the purpose and
implementation of environmental and food regulation.
One of many things I can pick apart is Cohen's high praise of the Delaney
clause that would ban carcinogens in food.....oh if only that were so
simple. In fact, that attractive-sounding clause did a lot of damage to
safety and environmental movements later because it was so draconian and
flawed.
FYI, Delany...the congressman who sponsored the law, had just tragically
lost his wife to cancer, which he attributed to consumer products and food.
His intentions were good, but result was a textbook example of awful
legislation and poor regulation of chemicals.
Felix, once again I admire your passion and sigh at its extremism...but I
realize they often go together.
Cheers!
Darian
