Reading and discussion of relevant papers from the fields of public health,anthropology, economics, and public policy. <br>
This class will cover the following topics related to the global AIDS pandemic:<br>
- the current public health crisis, including key target regions, model programs, vaccine potential, and proposals for the future<br>
- pharmaceutical debates: patent issues(including TRIPS/TRIMS, USTR issues, and IP protection), distribution, activism, viral resistance, and infrastructure<br>
- social dynamics: denial, orphans, blame, and community change <br>
- political issues: history, controversy (esp. the treatment v. prevention &quot;debate&quot;), current obstacles to effective disease control, and pragmatic options for student participation.<br>
The class will be a series of lectures and discussions, including guest lectures from experts representing organizations like the Student Global AIDS Campaign and the World Health Organization. The course work includes reading about one article per session as well as writing a paper due at the end of IAP. <br>
