Subject: Parsons Lab Seminar Monday 12/3

The Ralph M. Parsons Laboratory
Seminar Series

Monday, December 3rd, 2001
4pm

Make a difference:
Design the product not the process

presented by

Prof. J=F6rg Imberger
Chair, Center for Water Research
The University of Western Australia

The Swan Avon valley existed with a population of about 30,000 indigenous=20
people for many thousands of years in a relatively sustainable equilibrium.=
=20
In approximately 100 years, the same number of Europeans have turned the=20
area into an environmental waste land, have displaced the indigenous=20
people, and there is now danger of losing the economic value of the land=20
they occupy. I will examine the very different behavior of recent arrivals=
=20
to that of the original inhabitants by reviewing the developments in the=20
Swan Avon catchment and attempt to extract some generalization. From this=
=20
synthesis follows some very strong differences in behavior that, first,=20
explain the conflict between people in general and Nature and, second, the=
=20
indigenous inhabitants and the "New Australian". Analysis shows that the=20
engineer with the traditional design philosophies has been central in the=20
destruction that has occurred. Changing these design rules of the engineer=
=20
in combination with the behavior of the general public may be a way to=20
reverse the current destruction of biodiversity, cultural diversity, and=20
wealth equity and lead to a more sustainable existence.
