based on the emails i have received regarding the iap class, i
realize that many people do not know what i am talking about.
last year, some of us (mostly associated with sjc) decided to
organize a for-credit class during iap. here was it's
description in the catalog:

17.919
Special Topics in Political Science
What the American Government Doesn't Want You to Know

Level: U 6 units Graded P/D/F

Reading and discussion of special topics in the field of social science.
This class will cover the following four topics from a progressive view
point:
- the history of the labor movement in US since 1900
- US foreign policy since World War II
- human factors (civil rights, women's rights, etc.)in the US
- the economic history of public funding of research and the privatization
of its benefits
The class will be a series of lectures by local activists, students, and
intellectuals as well as MIT professors including Noam Chomsky and
Jonathan King. The course work includes reading primary and secondary
sources as well as writing a paper due at the end of IAP.

this description in no way reflects how the class has to be this year.
so far, the only person we have commited to speaking is chomsky. i think
he is going to do about as many lectures as he did last year (3 or 4).
the other speakers are yet to be determined by whoever wants to help
organize this. all input is welcome as to how we could do this class
differently this year. so if you are interested, come to a meeting
tomorrow night (wednesday) at 8pm in 13-4106. hope to see some of you
then, gabrielle
