Featured Speakers:
AMORY LOVINS is co-founder of Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), a non-profit
applied research center that fosters the efficient and restorative use of
natural and human capital. Mr. Lovins also co-founded and chairs Hypercar,
Inc., which is working to apply advanced, sustainable technologies in the
automobile industry. The recipient of numerous prestigious awards, Lovins has
consulted for scores of industries and governments worldwide. He was named a
TIME magazine Hero for the Planet 2000, and the Wall Street Journal's
Centennial Issue identified him as one of 39 people most likely to change the
course of business in the 1990s. Lovins is co-author of <Natural Capitalism:
Creating the Next Industrial Revolution>, and the forthcoming <Small is
Profitable: The Hidden Economic Benefits of Making Electrical Resources the
Right Size>. His Schumacher Lecture will build off of concepts presented in
<Natural Capitalism> with a focus on security issues related to energy and
economic policies.
JOHN TODD is an internationally recognized biologist and expert in the field
of ecological design. In 1969 he co-founded New Alchemy Institute to create a
science and engineering center based on ecological precepts. This was
followed by Ocean Arks International, founded in 1980 to promote ecological
design and engineering. Dr. Todd's ecological design work integrates energy
efficiency, architecture, waste management, food production, and ocean
transport components. He is well known for his innovative Living Machine, a
natural wastewater treatment system that has been adapted for use across the
globe. Dr. Todd has received several awards in recognition of his
contributions to planetary stewardship. He is currently a professor at the
University of Vermont and is working to develop an Eco-Industrial Park for
the city of Burlington. Dr. Todds Schumacher Lecture is entitled "Ecological
Design: Reinventing the Future."
Economic justice, land rights, and tax reform are the focus of the work of
educator and activist ALANNA HARTZOK. Hartzok's writings set forth a newly
emerging approach to taxation policy, providing a framework for building a
people-centered fair free market economy which more equitably distributes
wealth. Her published articles on tax reform are used by legislators in
several states and referenced in the Worldwatch Institute book, <The Natural
Wealth of Nations>. Ms. Hartzok serves as State Coordinator of the
Pennsylvania Fair Tax Coalition and is United Nations Non-Governmental
Organization Representative for the International Union for Land Value
Taxation. Currently Vice President of the Council of Georgist Organizations,
Hartzok founded the Earth Rights Institute in 1996 to further her work on tax
reform. Ms. Hartzok ran for office as the Green Party candidate for Congress
for District Nine in a special election in Pennsylvania in May 2001. Her
Schumacher Lecture, "Democracy, Earth Rights, and the Next Economy," will
present an overview of her work.
