You don't want to miss this show!!
The play centers around several community dividing issues. Religion, abortion
and rape. In particular, abortion in the case of rape.
The character of Keely is a young woman who is raped by her ex-husband. On
the day that she intends to terminate the pregnancy, she is kidnapped and
kept hostage as a means of "protest" by a pro-life movement called "Operation
Retrieval".
The story begins with Keely being brought into a basement, where she is to be
held, against her will, and brought to term. Thus, the life of the child
being saved and used as a political statement for "Operation Retrieval".
Keely is assigned an elderly nurse by the name of Du, who looks after her
while she is held hostage. The relationship that forms between them is
incredibly moving and undeniably powerful. The two women learn from each
other within their own confines.
Without giving the rest of the plot away, this should give you some idea of
the show. It does not take sides, however the end of the show definitely
portrays one group in a negative light.
Most theatre companies won't touch the show as they are afraid it is too
controversial. However, I believe it is a topic that needs to be out in the
open. Particularly since abortion in the case of rape has, is and always will
be the most common debate in the pro-choice/pro-life argument.
