I am writing this to those who
contacted me during the weekend about the matter of the suspension of
an MIT employee late Friday. It was difficult for me to
ascertain the facts during the long holiday weekend. This
morning we are releasing the following statement.

This morning it was verified that an employee of MIT had been
suspended with pay at the end of the work day last Friday, October
5. This action was taken after this individual had distributed
a leaflet protesting a company that was conducting recruiting
activities on campus.

MIT respects free speech and the right to peacefully express one's
views to others.

This morning, Tuesday, October 9, Provost Robert Brown completed a
review of the matter and the employee was fully reinstated at 9:00
am.
