I don't understand exactly. Of course, vt100 access prevents me from
testing.

Hi! A user who has had multiple problems with mailmaint sent in another
question to olc. Previously, he has random problems with mailmaint
starting up, and it was attributed to some buggy things on the RS/6000s.
Today, his problems were a bit different (although the root cause of the
problem may be the same). Here's the info:

Machine info:
Processor: DECstation Maxine
Display : Color DS Maxine
Memory : 0x1295000 user; 0x1800000 (24 M) total

It appears that the user has modified hes .Xresources file such that for
xterm check utmpinhibit. What appears when he tried to get in mailmaint
is:
"loading database for " and "Mail List Program for ".

And his username, rajiv, does not appear. The user said that when he
was logged into a Decstation mailmaint did not work, when he telnetted
mailmaint worked find and when he logged into an rs/6000, he got
mailmaint up, but it was for another user, kkken, who was logged into
the machine earlier in the morning. The following is taken from the olc
log:

i am now logged into a rs/6000, and the program says:
"Mail List Program for kkkken", not my user name. this person was logged
into this workstation early this morning:
kkkken pts/0 unix:0.0 Mon Feb 01 08:20 - 08:54 (00:33)

After the user typed

xterm +ut &

mailmaint worked from that xterm.

Anyway, Derrick took a look at the code for mailmaint and he wasn't sure
whenter the getlogin() funtion is getting a non-null, but still
non-visible result or if something else is getting corrupted along the
way. I was concerned though, even though he has modified his
.Xresources that he was able to get access via mailmaint through another
user's tickets, or uid, previously on the machine.

If you have any questions please let me know. Also, is the fix that we
suggested the most appropriate?

Thanks,

Pam
