Problem with updating secure password field

Because of a problem with SIS, the user 'echoi' somehow got a .extra
instance, but moira did not indicate that a secure password had been
set. (Scott Thorne knows about this problem.)
However, when I try manually updating the secure password field, I get
the error:
moira: Signature failed to verify in ModifyFields
User echoi not updated due to errors.
I tried several times yesterday afternoon and then just this morning and
each time it consistently gave that error. Is there any way to get
around this other than blowing away his .extra instance and having him
run reg_extra again?
