Hello Moiradev,
On Athena, the Moira clients are all attachandrun scripts pointed to
binaries in AFS. I am told this is done in order to keep all copies of
Moira at the same version, so that protocol updates can happen.
The debathena-moira-clients package on each of Debathena's 9 supported
distribution/architectures pairs installs a local copy of the Moira
clients. We do this because (A) we don't want an unecessary Moira
dependency on AFS, and (B) the Athena builds of Moira in AFS require old
libraries (like libcom_err.so.1) that Debian doesn't have.
The consult locker maintainers requested that we come to an agreement with
you regarding whether locker software using moira clients (such as
lastupd) should search for a local binary using the PATH, or whether it is
proper that they run it directly out of AFS. We're wondering what your
thoughts are on how this should be resolved.
