dcm/update server problems

We are having trouble gettin the DCM and the update server to
authenticate with kerberos. It seems the is a little program
called "smskey" that writes directly to the srvtab file.
For us this is a major no-no. Is it required that we use this
method? Would a normal srvtab entry for "sms" work? If not please
explain the strange way Kerberos authentication is used
by the DCM and update server.
