There are other places where code like that appears or appeared. This code was stolen from the sprintf sources in /paris/source/4.3/lib/libc/stdio/sprintf.c. It was used soley to get around lack of a good varargs interface so that things like critical_alert could use printf style arguments. It is gross indeed and should be replaced by something more portable.
