FYI, I stumbled across a bug in the version of the Pro*C precompiler
I had installed (8.1.7.1) which would cause moirad to frequently get
ORA-02111 ("heap consistency error") when closing the database; if you
reconnected without restarting moirad you'd eventually SEGV on some
innocuous database access.
I found a workaround (precompile with RELEASE_CURSOR=YES), and
installed the most recent Oracle 8i patch set (8.1.7.4) on wrong-tool,
this morning, which appears to fix the problem. So we'll end up going
with that version of Oracle for the production deployment.
