chfn update problems

we have a user, username "kavita", who is unable to update her athena
finger info using chfn. the update seems to go through, but then after a
day her entry reverts to the default. to test this i changed her athena
finger info for her using my accounts bits, and i am seeing the same
behavior.
she is trying to change her home phone number field. we set it, and a day
later, presumably after a nightly update, it reverts to empty.
any thoughts?
