resolve.conf is only used for DNS and is independent of /etc/hosts.
It's possible for this to have been the failure, but I'm not sure why
vysslynn would resolve to localhost.localdomain, unless they both
appeared in the same /etc/hosts entry or something.

Because the cannonical name was not in the mit.edu domain, is was
intentionally ommited by moira when generating the host table for the
name servers.
