It's a known... misfeature.
The problem is that it tries to be helpful by resolving the name that
you give it. This lets you say "joy" when what you really mean is
"joy.mit.edu", or "lnitp" when you really mean
"lying-naked-in-the-periwinkle.mit.edu". Helpful, eh?
But it does this using DNS, which lags behind the db, so doing things
involving cname swaps is always painful. The solution is to fully
resolve the names yourself and put quotes around them. (So if you try
to create a machine called "joi.mit.edu" with the quotes, it will
work.)
Fixing this _is_ on my moira to-do list.
