Hardware is not so much a problem as support. We have speed-queen,
intended to be a Linux build engine, and a few machines left over from
the PCUE effort, but I'm not sure if speed-queen is running anything
at all current right now, and there's no NetBSD build machine. SIPB
has a stated commitment to provide resources to MIT developers to
support Linux and NetBSD, so I don't think there's a problem in the
short term.

I certainly agree. As the release engineer, I don't make explicit
support plans and commitments, but since I do do the work, I will say
that I plan to push an effort to develop IS support for both Linux and
NetBSD as non-cluster platforms. Precisely what that means is still
in the air, but at a minimum it implies no hardware support and less
of a focus on the install system. These plans will probably take more
shape as I autoconfiscate the Athena hierarchy.
If I'm at all successful, there will have to be Linux and NetBSD wash
machines at that point.
As for building moira on the rel-eng wash machines, that raises a lot
of little issues which I don't have answers for right now. I'll let
it sit in my head for a while and come back to it later.
