Project Name: Third Barton Project (Project to find a replacement
for the MIT LIbrary Management System)
Project Management Team: Nina Davis-Millis, Joan Kolias, Carl Jones
Report Date: September 23, 1999
URL: http:/macfadden.mit.edu:9500/c3/3dbarton
Accomplishments Past Period:
- The biggest news is our first vendor demo (SIRSI) has come and gone.
The demo took place over two days (9/20-21) and included
a general overview of the majority of system modules on the first day,
with a more technical session on the second day in which we had invited
members of the MIT Integration Team to attend. We also passed out and
collected our prepared vendor evaluation forms from staff in attendance
during the first day which should allow us to gain some initial "measure" of staff
impressions regarding the various modules. We've also put up a form on
our web page where staff can make more generalized comments about the demos.
- Finally met with Scott Thorne to talk about the library data model. This
was a productive session where we focused in particular on identifying
areas where the library system exchanges data with external systems
(e.g. outside vendors, SAP, etc).
- We still have not heard from 3 of the vendors concerning their
data model or API information . For those who did respond, we have
we were asked to sign a non-disclosure form in order to see some
partial API documentation. We have done this with one of the two vendors.
We felt signing the non-disclosure was a reasonable request.
Goals for the Coming Period:
- Endeavor demo begins this coming Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Our Meeting with Thomas Egan and Anthony Flanagan of the Procurement
Office is set for October 1. We will discuss what kinds of items should be
include in the RFP. We intend to keep the RFP to a brief format.
- Go through vendor evaluation forms from the SIRSI demo and tally up the
"ratings" for what staff thought of each of the modules.
- Setup meeting with Vijay, Greg, Eric, and 3rd Barton Project Management Team
to give them an update discuss the next stages of the project.
Key Learnings:
- None this session
Team Dynamics:
- None
Issues:
- None
Comments:
- Staff are very excited to finally see some of what the newer client-server
based systems have to offer.
- We were more impressed than we had expected to be by the quality of
the SIRSI demo, and are feeling more energized about contacting sites using the
SIRSI system to find out more of what they have to say. We have already spent
some time identifying a few of their larger academic sites.
