The problem is that (according to the students I've talked about this)
parents want to _see_ the machine that they're purchasing for their
children, and aren't happy with the MCC/NECX approach to ordering the
machine to show up in a few weeks. This,in the case of a few people I
know personally, resulted in people who wanted to run linux or netbsd but
were stuck with Microsoft OSes due to cheap but proprietary hardware.

My understanding is that working with local over-the-counter vendors would
violate our agreements with NECX, so I think we're cleverly painted into a
corner on this one.
