Project Name: Online Credit Card Processing Project (aka, chargeit)
Project Leader: Lorraine Rappaport
Report Date: 7/15/1999
Project url: http://web.mit.edu/is/discovery/ccard

First, a brief introduction. The discovery question for this project is:
How can MIT provide MIT departments, labs, centers, and affiliated groups
the ability to accept payment for goods and services by credit card via the
web?

Accomplishments past period:
- Began to consolidate list of MIT "merchant" groups that have expressed
interest in credit card processing via the web. Generated list of
questions to ask them about their business, requirements for this service,
etc.
- Began to brainstorm a list of guidelines for groups that want/need to
explore and implement their own solutions before our centralized service
becomes available
- Met with Open Market to learn about their Transact product
- Received information from CyberCash about their service
- Scheduled presentation by SAP to learn about their credit card functionality

Goals for the coming period:
- Set up meetings with interested MIT "merchant" groups to inform them of
the project, understand their businesses, requirements, etc.
- Sort through information received from Open Market, CyberCash, et. al.
and follow up as necessary
- Contact First Data, and other potential vendors for information

Issues:
- Managing expectations and providing guidance for groups that "can't wait"
will be key

Team dynamics:
- Still forming and trying to come to grips with scope issues.
- For now, we are experimenting with a small core team with several key
interested parties involved around the edges. In terms of coordinating the
work, this makes sense (so far); in terms of understanding roles and levels
of involvement for the full participant list, this could get tricky.

Additional comments:
- This is a nice fit with some other e-commerce work going on and some
other efforts beginning to heat up. The timing is definitely right
(though some would say it's long overdue).
