Project name: Electronic Thesis Submission
Projects leaders: Keith Glavash and Bill Cattey
Report date: 1/14/99

Accomplishments past period:
- Larry Stone built a web service to convert PostScript documents into PDF.
This adds another option for the student considering participation in the
project.
- Larry also set up a discuss list for interested people: <etheses-discuss>.
- Keith Glavash pulled together a meeting of the principals involved in
"thesis holds" to discuss how these might be handled in the electronic
environment. [Dean for Graduate Studies, Archives, Technology Licensing
Office, Document Services.] This is important because it represents a
potential roadblock to progress on e-theses if key people are not confident
we have made provisions for such "holds". Glavash and Liz Andrews of the
Archives proposed a plan to improve communication and information sharing
among the people involved in the "hold" process. And Glavash explained the
plan to segregate any e-thesis in this category from the rest, providing a
secure environment until the thesis is "released".

Goals for the coming period:
- Contact each student individually via email to 1) remind them of the
e-submission option; 2) encourage them to participate; 3) offer to help in
whatever way we can and let them know about the discuss list.
- Begin work on a website for information about thesis "holds".

Issues:
- Does Larry have time to build the website?

Key learnings:
- A mistake in the electronic environment regarding a thesis "hold" could
spell big trouble for the project. Proceed with caution!
