Project Name: 3rd Barton (Project to find a replacement for the
MIT Library Management System)
Project Management Team: Carl Jones, Joan Kolias, Nina Davis-Millis
Report Date: Feb. 24, 1999

Accomplishments past period:
- Functionality and Market Survey Teams continue to meet. Entering phase
of putting findings into a format which can be shared with the Project Mgt.
Team and rest of the staff.
- Heard back from Scott Thorne re. setting up time for a discussion of
library data model and need to follow up (check everyone's schedule and
pick a date).
- 3rd Barton Web page updated.
Goals for the coming period:
- Project Mgrs. beginning work on the Request for Solution (RFS). Deadline
for draft is April 12.
- Report from Market Survey Team targeted for April 9.
- Functional Checklist Teams finishing up their work.
- Schedule data-model meeting with Scott Thorne.
Key Learnings:
- Recommending Project Management Team members avoid participating on
working groups in future, as it becomes difficult to find time for both
project management related duties and those of the various groups.
This happened with regard to the Market Survey Team, where we failed
to find enough volunteers.
- Timetable for beginning first round of vendor demos may need to
be advanced into May from June because of conflicts with June national
meetings (e.g. American Library Association summer conference, etc.).
This requires getting the RFS to vendors sooner than originally
anticipated.
- It will likely be up to the Project Mgt. Team to take the Market
Survey information and make the initial vendor pool recommendations.
Issues:
- Market Survey Team is having to deal with some lingering issues regarding
'who's in/who's out, and why'. We have tried to make the criteria for
inclusion as clear as possible, but there have been occasional questions
as to how thorough the search has been.
Comments:
- Pushing the timetable forward for vendor demos to begin may work, but
scheduling will be tight. We'll have to maintain some flexibility.
