Jonathan,
I got the same problem with my telnet client. The telnet client in beta 6
and later now use a checksum value in submitting its credentials wich mean
that telnet clients of beta 4 will not be able to authenticate to telnetd
beta 6.
Also, the Beta 6 telnet client ues a different key in the mutual
authentication step. wich causes the same problem.
Unfortunately I had to track these problems the hard way, and now I am
fixing my telnet client to work in both environments.
If you have the same version of telnet and telnetd you should be fine.

I hope this helps

Note: What was the rational behind all these changes to telnet? Can anyone
please give a little detail. Thank you.
