You were using GNU sed version 3.0, weren't you? If so, you will find
this excerpt from ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/sed-3.0.README
informative:
sed 3.0 has been withdrawn from distribution. It has major revisions,
which mostly seem to be improvements; but it turns out to have bugs too
which cause trouble in some common cases.
Version 2.05 of GNU sed is once again the recommended version.
