I solved the problem by rebuilding gdbm to not use file locking at
all. (Look in system.h in the gdbm sources to see where to change it.)
You might try building v5 with the included berkeley db instead of
with dbm, as another way around the problem. (I'll be submitting
patches to the FSF to put this on an environment variable, but I don't
know if they'll take it...)
