Yep. You do have to run kadmind. After an error happens you can use the command
'show server kerberos' and one of the things it displays is the last kerberos
error which sometimes helps (you can also look at the syslogd messages file
on the KDC sometimes). All the errors are not documented by you can get a
complete list from Xyplex. I have only hard copy but I can FAX you my FAX if
you want but the quality might not be too good.

We are running with Sun/OS so I'm not sure I can be of much help. However,
my version contains 3 admin daemons. I don't understand why or what the
differences are other than V4 but kadmin5d does not work on my machine either.
I use kdamind (I don't bother with kadmin4d since we only have V5 devices
so I don't know if it works or not). Also there is an undocumented principal
needed to get password changing to work and be sure your /etc/services file
is correct. You need to enter the following kdb5_edit command:
ark changepw/[your.realm]
Where [your.realm] is your local realm. One is required for each realm
that KDC services (do not include the []). Hope this gets you a little further
along.
