Authentication Only ?

This posting is going to highlight my ignorance about
Kerberos. But I ask you to bear with me for a moment
while I try to explain our situation.

Here at the ISU Library, we have read-only bibliographic
databases that we are licensed to provide to the ISU
community. Right now we limit access to this material
by IP address. If you are not from an on-campus
address, you can't get in. (This is through our
web server - NCSA httpd 1.4.)

The university-wide computer system uses Kerberos
for authentication.

We would like to allow our users to access this
information from their homes, or other off-campus
connections.

The question: Is there some way we can use Kerberos
only for authentication? We don't want to require
that users have a Kerberos enabled browser (because
there aren't any for PC or Mac). So we don't want
the encryption/ticket features in this situation,
only an ability to authenticate a username & password.

Thanks for any comments.
