Centrally stored MSI Information
http://web.mit.edu/pismere/msilist/msilist.xml
XML version of Chad's list.
Security issues - wide open because need to be readable to domain users
Someone could take an MSI and use it on own machine.
Have the XML not include link for licensed sw.
Include sub fields under license-info field to indicate what type of license
XSL Template file converts into desired output style.
uses msxsl processor
use msilist as input file
uses CVS
Deployed via pismere locker in AFS
Pros - Free, extremely general, largely understood by application
uses simple text editor
revision control
Cons - We make the rules
difficult to learn, tedious to write (hard stuff only needs to be done
once, easy to parrot)
Not widespread enough to be easily accessible by laypeople
Still at Version 1 - not perfect.
usually command line client
learning curve
some gotchas (filename capitalization/binary/text tags, ETC.)
Suggestion - style sheet for chad, make one to resemble swrt style sheet
Review SWRT installer for windows - Do we need to extend base schema.
Change MSI Information to MSI Author Information
Spruce of Sub-pages
IS Look and feel?
Joint style page top level
Single style page one level down
Someone should check MSI before making it available (Maybe Chad)
Paul/Joe/Jonathon will review SWRT pages.

Proposal for central file server ready for next week. Isn't this what AFS
is for?
Some people need more space. Professional service providers should be
providing this service.
Options:
Migrate member into domain as File Server.
Set central IS File Server
AFS
There are some needs that are too large for AFS
NTFS can handle large files
Some Departments want local control
NTFS can get info from other non-domain machines.
Server 2003 - Can be member Server. Would IS put as much effort into
Troubleshooting as 2000? Paul - yes, but it is a new product. Richard
agrees would like some early adopters.
SP4 W2K status? With new AFS client have not seen any problems. Can be
deployed by container admin for their machines but not to point of MSI
deployed to all machines in domain. Will be discussed at containers admin
meeting tomorrow.
MS03-026 Patch Has info been passed to net-security for them to put out
right advisory.? Bob Mahoney has sent e-mail on how to patch machines safely.
