Chad,

I'm available ever weekday. We could meet tomorrow afternoon.

Concerning your questions:
1) The goal is to be able to use Windows machines the way we use Athena
machines - remote login and authentication using Kerberos at the very
least. MatLab and SolidWorks would be a real plus if we did not have to
pay for them. Microsoft Office may or may not be necessary. Ideally we'd
like to keep costs at a minimum. We're exploring this as a complement to
the private Athena workstations we already have, which do not cost us any
money to run (aside from electricity and hardware costs).

2) I'd like the following people to have administrative access:
Jose Soltren jsoltren@mit.edu Student
Mark Tobenkin mmt@mit.edu Student

I (Jose) have experience with Windows from a system administrator's
perspective. I have some limited experience managing a Windows domain. I
believe this is also Mark's situation.

3) The proposed environment would consist of an undetermined number of
machines (right now, just one, but this may increase) throughout our house
at TEP. We have two networked PostScript laser printers, an HP LaserJet
4050N and a Tektronix Phaser 740. There may be future interest in using
video editing software, but that's not an issue at this point in time.

I'd like to leave the option open to brothers of the house to configure
their own machines using WinAthena. Since Windows stores a user's files
locally, it may be a viable option for individuals to set up their own
computers using the domain.

We're an overwhelmingly Linux house with a couple of Mac OS X machines
(and an Athena station running Solaris).

4) Right now, we're just looking at a couple of laptops that would only
use WinAthena within MITNet (18.*.*.*). Since we're just looking at a few
machines right now, maybe 2 desktops and 1 laptop, the ratio is about 2:1.

Thank you for your prompt response to my request! I'll happily discuss any
further issues as they arise. Once again, cost is a prohibitive factor,
something we would need to vote upon as a house.
