Accomplishments in October
-------------------------
Major Accomplishments
The use of the win.mit.edu Domain does not double as in September,
but rises over 15% to 600 unique logins and 300 unique machines per
day. See:
http://web.mit.edu/winathena-stat
The team makes several presentations to the fall IT Partners
conference. See:
http://web.mit.edu/pismere/presentations/itpartners/2003-10-23
Wireless notes are published. See:
http://web.mit.edu/pismere/presentations/laptop.txt
There are these new or improved web forms:
Production version of Container Request

Opt-In/Out Management Page

Detailed Accomplishments
Richard gets the RIS image installing the IBM ThinkCentre. He
upgrades isnt to SP4, presents DITR lessons on desktop migration,
tests VPN. He reports that ASO moves to TSM, so he looks at the
Veritas plugin. He tests the new Citrix server and Open AFS and gets
the Recovery Console feature working in RIS. With Paul and Joe they
document new GP settings before deployment: null sessions; offline
files; and eventsyslogger.
Dave tests incremental and the AFS torture test. He looks at adding
new IRIPs, at exercising Unicode filenames, also at applying the
torture tests to Samba 3.0 and gets AFS source from Asanka to test AFS
on tether and VPN.
Asanka fixes the IE bookmark bug asking Steve Dowdy and Ed Block to
try the binary and verify.
Qing tests two new FileZilla servers, but still sees GSS-related
stalls. She coordinates new FZ clients with SWRT. She studies
offline files, repairs symlink.exe, takes up Chris Cary's VS7
compilation efforts, builds the tree and implements such scripts for
the wash. She writes the opt-out web form and revises the tempjoin
page.
Paul works on a transform page. He assists Barry in using filemon to
debug the Corporate Time client. He also obtains details on the
Windows network provider realm bug that may get XP & 2K patches.
Joe debugs VPN. He recompiles sendbug, then tests and deploys it with
a new binary, help and .ini files. He revises ANSIfy to use a disable
flag, finds a leash32 bug. He revises container-maintenance forms,
sees that a handful of machines have yet to take the 2003-09-15 AFS,
so contacts their container admins. He helps Barry with a machine
that choked on SP3, deploys optoutrollout with Garry, puts a new
sendbug onto DFS and crafts a "Help us test" page and announcement
message to container admins. He indexes a new MSDN and works on a
"copy-adm" script to refresh GPOs. He works with Oliver on the
official container request form. He writes a remote eventlog script,
rewrites mirror-distrib and revises tellme for W2K3.
Collectively we help Chad to get the 37-312 machines using the new
path for mirror-distrib and to work around an Architecture Retrospect
bug.
November Community Milestones
----------------------------
- We expect two new web forms for license requests and MSI transforms.
- Container Admins meet 21 November.
Other Goals for November
-----------------------
- Implement MSI repository and document it.
- Plan to deploy LPRNG.
Longer Term Goals
----------------
- Test and document new features, nonroaming profiles and machines
outside the MIT TLD.
- Get schema OID from Tom C.
- Get help from Garry and TomC to put non-null Kerberos instances into
Moira.
- Do further work to populate AD attributes, such as white pages info,
from the MIT data warehouses.
Issues
-----
There is much documentation that requires better presentation.
We debug VPN problems with AFS.
We need advance notice of the date when SMTP auth becomes a requirement.
