OpenAFS as has been pointed out to you is probably your best bet. None
the less, I thnk you are facing the following choice:

1) spend time and energy getting open AFS to work (tho given what it's
all running on, who knows, it might not be that bad)

2) upgrade your hardware. A G4 with Mac OS X and arla isn't a bad
choice. Interface Builder, Project Builder etc have come a long way. 8-)
