solaris 8 client poor performance

I have a solaris 8 client using transarc's afs client;
the distribution is marked "afsws.36-26", so I'd
conclude it's some version of 3.6.
The write performance of this solaris 8 machine is
15 (FIFTEEN) times slower than a solaris 2.6 machine
running 3.4 a6-577 client. The solaris 8 machine's
networking and disk performance are satisfactory, &
that particular machine is about twice as fast as
the solaris 2.6 machine in processor & memory bandwidth.
Any ideas about what the problem is?
