We encountered something like this about two years ago, though I
beleive we saw were unbelievable usages for the partition too.
Unfortunately I don;t remember what versions of things we were running
at the time, but I seem to recall the problem was due to a single file
in the volume. Looking back at some old mail, I see a note that an
"incorrect length" error from the salvager was actually the first
symptom we saw (though we didn't know what it meant at the time).
