To nit-pick at some of what Craig said:
cmu.edu does not actually run AMDS, though it claims to. It
implements enough AMDS functionality to get away with its claims.
Both andrew.cmu.edu (which runs AMDS) and cs.cmu.edu (which does not)
refer to cmu.edu's database to deliver mail through with minimal
hassles (if "foo@cmu.edu" forwards mail to "bar@some.do.main", both
sites will deliver mail addressed to "foo@cmu.edu" to
"bar@some.do.main", short-circuiting the hop to cmu.edu). cmu.edu
itself does not look at any other host's database when delivering
mail.
