Has anyone tried implementing a generic mail server, post office type
facility with afs? The problem I'm trying to solve is where users turn their
workstations off for extended periods of time and their mail gets bounced
back to the senders. Having a mail server where mail can sit until it's
fetched by the mail agent on the user workstation would be a nice feature.
POP addresses this issue, but I was thinking it might be possible to do it
in a more generic manner with afs. The idea is that somehow /usr/spool/mail
would reside in afs. I haven't thought this through completely, but
something like...

- each workstation has a symlink from /usr/spool/mail to say
/afs/cell/spool/mail

- incoming mail is routed to the mail server, which is running sendmail
under an account named say "postmaster" that has acl write access to the
spool files

- each user spool file is actually a symlink to a file in an afs directory
which has read/write access granted only to that specific user and
postmaster

I don't know if something like this is doable, but I thought I'd ask if
anyone had already tried.

Thanks!
