You can take a look in:
/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/wsadmin/lib/sys
There is a file:
tree.${SYS}
for the sun4c_411 and pmax_ul4 OS trees. This are slightly more complex
than other setups, but allow mixing and matching of the OS tree software
between AFS and the local disk at different levels.
There is a slightly outdated explaination of how we do things in:

Please note that all of the entries that look like:
${cp/binF}
Are normally expanded by mpp to be L (for link), but you can redefine
then to be F and copy those sections to the local disk.
The good thing is that this file has only OS tree stuff in it. The rest
is in other places. The device information in in the same directory in
device.${SYS}.
