Don't forget to update your CellServDB AND YOUR CLIENTS!

Hi, it's us again!

Chalmers University of Technology has changed all addresses on its IP
network in two steps (November 13, 1991 and January 15, 1992). This
involved the server for the cs.chalmers.se cell in November and servers
for the others.chalmers.se cell yesterday.

However, there are *still*, after two months, clients looking for a
non-existent DB server! The traffic generates about 1 packet/second,
according to our campus net-spies. The invalid address is 129.16.2.22
(undis-o.cs.chalmers.se), and it does not exist as pointed out on this
mailing-list on November 21. A current list (compiled from 0700-1530
UTC, January 15) of clients is enclosed last in this message.

It seems that, for a short time, there existed a CellServDB at
Transarc containing a "spelling" error: The address 129.16.225.17 was
entered as 129.16.255.17. One host is still reported to use that one:
linus.mitre.org.

And now, effective January 15, the server for the others.chalmers.se
cell has changed.

Lastly, a question: Is there a mechanism, other than rebooting, to
inform the CM about changes for a particular cell and have it to
discard any out-of-date information (like pointing to non-existent DB
    servers).

Simply using `fs newcell ...' doesn't seem to do the job, even
combined with an `fs checkvolumes', or whatever. The CM is still very
ambitiuos in its attempts to contact an obsolete volume location
server (7003), even though it has a correct list of DB servers according
to `fs listcells'. I know, my WS was on the list...

There was a thread started on December 20, intended to initiate a
discussion on possible solutions for this problem (Subject: Req for
improvement of AFS 3), but there never really was any discussion,
possibly because of Christmas. Maybe my question could revive that
subject.
