Problems using AFS->NFS translator

I am mount /afs through an AFS->NFS onto a PS/2 running OS/2 2.0 and
IBM TCP/IP 1.2. I have had no problems mounting real NFS filesystems
on OS/2, but I am having difficulty with the translator. Some (not
all) of the time when I run DIR (the equivalent of ls) on an AFS dir,
the process hangs partway through the listing. It happens frequently
enough that I've never actually tried to read a file from an AFS
directory (it always hangs first).

Obviously, this could be a bug with OS/2 (and I'm sure most people
will be happy to dismiss it as that). However, as normal NFS service
appears to work, it is at least possibly a bug with the translator.
Does anyone have a clue what might be going on?

Thanks.
